The journey has been an interesting one. I have always enjoyed camping, from cubs at Fort Lennox, to a scout summer camp near Verona, yes Italy, in the early 60s, to most recently at Mont-Tremblant where it always rained when I was with my cousin Claudette.
Travel trailers have held my interest for over 20 years. Airstreams particularly. Real eye candy, really expensive. Belgian chocolates of RVs.
I sat in them, squeezed the furniture and was always awed.
I did not have to do much homework to find out they were totally out of my price range, they depreciate quickly, corrode, dent easily, leak and cost a lot to repair
A little over a year ago Airstreams began invading the space over my head on sleepless nights. After more homework and lingering doubts, I began looking at other types of RVs and discovered light, strong and waterproof fibreglass travel trailers, very popular and expensive American trailers.
I came across a blurb on Escape trailers which are manufactured in Chilliwack, British Columbia and a phone call eventually led me to three Ottawa area Escape owners.
I was quickly hooked and ordered an Escape 19 a year ago.
Yes, it takes a year.
I guess I somehow knew this was going to happen because I had started looking at tow vehicles months before ordering the Escape. Someone was watching over me because I brand-bounced until settling on the Canyon Diesel. No regrets. Reviews from Canyon owners towing Escapes are very positive.
There was an annoying communications hiccup with Escape Trailer Industries and my delivery date has yet to be confirmed. Could be May 23 or 24.
Building an Escape is a long process, especially if it’s your first up at bat. Luckily there are resources galore to help a buyer decide: a user forum, ETI staff and Escape owners who have become friends.
I have a few days left before heading west and I’ll be busy sorting and packing gear and mapping the trip there and back.
I have booked BC campgrounds and I am really tempted to mostly wing it the rest of the way home.
More on that later as I make it up.
